Why do we have Protectors, if they can’t protect us?

I was returning home from college late that night
when my mom called up & yelled in fright,
“Where have you reached! How much more time? Are you on a bus?”
“Relax! I’m walking home mom, it’s just 10, what’s the fuss?”
She yelled some more, nothing unusual, and I pretended to hear,
Come on! It’s been 23 years of putting up with her unnecessary fear.

I reached home after 10 minutes, she was watching the evening NEWS
I didn’t bother and casually took off my shoes.
I sat down besides her thinking, "Thank God! the usual lecture I escaped.”
News Flash: ‘23 year old student, on a bus, gang RAPED!’
I was stunned. The number and words echoed in my ear.
I realized that all this while I wasn’t putting up with unnecessary fear…

The drunken bastards! They don’t deserve Life!
They didn’t only physically rape her; they stabbed her soul with a knife!
Just to satiate their human greed,
They performed such an inhumane deed.
Didn't they think once that she is a human being, not an object for use?
But sadly this is a country where criminals have nothing to lose

Everyone passes the buck around, nobody shares the blame.
Corrupt at all levels, this whole system is lame!
I hear idiots saying, “Women should know what to wear, they should dress properly.”
Knowing that even babies and school girls aren’t spared, you stress on ‘dress appropriately’?
So now since you made it clear that safety comes with your attire,

I request our Protectors to kindly retire!
